Take a Breath: How to Breathe Away Gym Anxiety

Take a Breath: How to Breathe Away Gym Anxiety

Whether you’re walking into a packed weights room, trying a new class, or simply hopping on a treadmill during peak hours, your heart can start racing before you’ve done any actual exercise.

If your mind ever says things to you like:
  • “Everyone’s looking at me,”
  • “What if I do it wrong?”
  • “I don’t belong here!”

…then you’re not alone. In fact, this is called gym anxiety, and it’s something lots of people experience—even the ones who look super confident. Luckily, there’s a simple trick to help calm your nerves before you lift a single weight. And best of all, it doesn’t cost a thing. It’s your breath!

Why Breathing Can Calm You Down

When you feel nervous, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode. This reaction is useful if a tiger is chasing you, but not so much when you're just trying to do squats. However, deep breathing sends a message to your brain that says, “It’s okay. We’re safe. No need to panic.” So, instead of letting the nerves take over, you can take control simply by breathing in the right way.

Simple Breathing Tricks to Try

You don’t need a yoga mat or a candle-lit room. Actually, you can do these anywhere—in the car, the changing room, or even while queuing for the water fountain.

Box Breathing (Before walking into the gym)

  • Firstly, breathe in for 4 counts
  • Then, hold your breath for 4 counts
  • Next, breathe out for 4 counts
  • Finally, hold again for 4 counts
  • Repeat this 3–4 times. It helps slow your heart and settle your thoughts.

The Sighing Breath (When you feel a bit overwhelmed mid-workout)

  • Take a slow breath in through your nose
  • Let out a big sigh through your mouth (yes, make it loud if you like!)
  • After a few rounds, you’ll feel much calmer and more grounded.

Alternate Nostril Breathing (When you need a full reset)

This one’s a little quirky, but surprisingly helpful.
  • Use your thumb to close one nostril
  • Breathe in through the other side
  • Switch nostrils and breathe out
  • Keep switching back and forth slowly

Although it might feel strange at first, it clears your mind.

Turn It Into a Habit

Of course, it might feel odd the first few times. But if you keep doing it, breathing will become your new go-to for those “gym panic” moments.

Try using it:
  • Just before a group fitness class
  • While waiting for equipment
  • Right before stepping onto the gym floor

Eventually, you’ll find it becomes second nature.

Remember: You Do Belong Here
No matter what, everyone at the gym was once a beginner. Whether you're lifting weights, joining a yoga class, or just trying something new, you absolutely belong here. Take a breath before the burn. You’ve got this.
