Welcome to
Week 2: RUN Week. Following our explosive HIIT sessions last week, we are now turning our focus toward the most important muscle in your body: your heart.
In the fitness community, we often call your heart and lungs "The Engine." Just as a car needs a reliable engine to get you where you need to go, your body relies on your cardiovascular health to power you through your workouts and your daily life. This week, we are exploring the
RUN pillar and why a strong engine is the ultimate fitness partner.
What is Cardiovascular Health? Cardiovascular health refers to how efficiently your heart and circulatory system work to transport oxygenated blood to your muscles. When you engage in cardio training, you are essentially "servicing" your engine.
A healthy heart pumps more blood with less effort. Over time, this lowers your resting heart rate and blood pressure, making you feel more energetic and less breathless during everyday tasks like climbing stairs or carrying shopping.
Why RUN Week is for Everyone The word "Run" can be intimidating, but at Welcome Gym, this week is about finding the pace that works for you. The goal of the RUN pillar is to sustain a raised heart rate, and there are many ways to achieve that on our cardio floors:
- The Power of the Incline: If running isn't your thing, walking on a steep incline is a fantastic alternative.
- Mastering Pacing: Cardiovascular health isn't always about going as fast as possible.
- Heart Rate Recovery: The stronger your engine becomes, the faster your heart rate drops back to normal.
If you are new to the gym floor or would like a professional to show you how to use the treadmill and heart rate sensors, why not book a free 30-minute Gym Intro at your nearest club? Our instructors will ensure you feel confident setting up your equipment for a safe and effective routine.
The Long-Term Benefits Building your engine during RUN week offers rewards that go far beyond the gym floor:
- Improved Mood: Cardio is one of the best ways to release endorphins, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
- Better Sleep: Consistent cardiovascular exercise helps you fall asleep faster and reach deeper stages of rest.
- Faster Recovery: A strong engine means better blood flow, which helps your muscles recover more quickly after strength training or HIIT sessions.
Take the Engine 5 Challenge To help you find your stride this week, we have created
The Engine 5 routine. This is a structured treadmill session designed to test your endurance and pacing:
- Incline Walk: Start with a steady, steep climb to wake up your legs.
- The Pyramid: Practice interval training with alternating run and walk periods.
- Power Walk: A sustained, high-resistance effort to build lung capacity.
- "All Out" Sprint: A final burst of speed to test your cardiovascular power.
- Cool Down: A vital step to lower your heart rate safely and begin the repair process
Find Your Pace Whether you are a seasoned marathon runner or you are taking your first steps toward a fitter lifestyle, your cardiovascular health is your best friend.
