In this instalment of our
International Women’s Day series, we are getting to know
Joanne Stevenson, a Class Instructor at Welcome Gym Maidstone.
With a background in education and a deep love for the energy of group exercise, Joanne shares how she helps women find their "lightbulb moment" and why sometimes, the best way to beat a plateau is to try something completely new.
The Group Exercise Lightbulb Moment "
Generally this is a connection to the music in group ex or seeing and feeling the results of the workout. People love to immerse in a beat to motivate them through a workout. After one or two sessions they often start to prefer working out with a group rather than pounding miles alone on a treadmill."
Coaching Through the Low Points "
This largely consists of giving more coaching and demo based instruction. I can avoid jumping around like a lunatic when I am modelling an exercise!" This allows Joanne to still provide a high-quality session for the members while being kind to her own energy levels.
Managing the Cycle with Nutrition "
I realise that I naturally crave different nutrition groups at certain points. I listen to the cues and go with that. If budget allows, good fillet steak is my rocket boost. I notice that I tend to choose more colourful, fresh or raw veg when I need more of a lift. But I just cannot do without chips in my life at any point. For this reason, I try to prepare by having a good stock ready."
From the Back of the Room to the Front "
Les Mills body pump with Les Mills body attack as a close second. I loved the thrill of everyone connecting, riding the endorphins and knowing that it was all healthy. Oh and getting paid for it too!"
Fuel Between Sessions "
It used to be nuts or granola but I got indigestion too much. It is now either dried or fresh fruit or beans if I am out. I am also a sucker for beef jerky."
Supporting the Nervous Newcomer "
I come from an education background and so I hope I am aware of individuals who feel a bit intimidated by the group setting. It is important that I speak to them discreetly (if possible) and get to know what their aims and needs are. I try to keep it relaxed and light-hearted. I want them to enjoy their workout as soon as they are moving safely. And we want them to come back."
The Secret Weapon for Recovery "
My secret weapon is decompression time; a shower or bath, relaxed stretch time and space for refuelling. Recharge and reset."
Breaking Through a Plateau
"
Go to a new class (mine), try a PT session or explore a different part of the gym. Do not be held back by routine if it does not serve your purpose."
