Have you ever wondered why circuit training feels so much more intense than a standard weightlifting session? It all comes down to how we power our "engine". At Welcome Gym, we love circuits because they combine the best of both worlds: strength building and cardiovascular endurance. By understanding the science behind the burn, you can refine your training routine and get the most out of every minute spent on the gym floor.
THE SCIENCE OF THE CIRCUIT When you move quickly from one exercise to the next with minimal rest, your body enters a state of metabolic stress. This is often referred to as "the burn". This sensation is caused by the buildup of lactate in your muscles, which is a sign that your body is working hard to produce energy.
- Efficient Calorie Burn: Because your heart rate remains elevated throughout the entire session, you continue to burn energy at a higher rate even after you have finished your workout.
- Functional Strength: Circuits often use compound movements that mimic real-life activities, making your engine more efficient for daily tasks and weekend adventures alike.
PARTNER CIRCUIT: SHARE THE POWER In the spirit of our social move, try this "You Go, I Go" circuit with a workout buddy. One person works while the other rests or performs a steady recovery movement. Complete 3 rounds total.
- Station 1: 40 seconds of Battle Ropes (Partner rests).
- Station 2: 40 seconds of Wall Balls (Partner holds a plank).
- Station 3: 40 seconds of Kettlebell Swings (Partner rests).
- Station 4: 40 seconds of Slam Balls (Partner performs star jumps).
MASTERING THE BURN The key to mastering the burn is to stay consistent with your breathing. Instead of holding your breath during difficult reps, focus on a steady rhythm of "exhale on the effort". This keeps oxygen flowing to your muscles and helps you maintain your intensity for longer.
INTER-CLUB CHALLENGE: TASTER WEEKS START NOW There is no better way to test your engine than by participating in our
